The past week was a boring one for most investors – the S&P 500 stayed mostly flat between last Monday and Friday, leaving the majority of stocks largely unchanged. But that wasn’t the case for penny stock investors. In fact, if you kept up with our Penny Stock Watchlist, you could have made 11%, 14.7%, or even a much as 235%…

Here’s our list of penny stocks to watch for the coming week.

Last week, we told you to watch five stocks – three long and two short – that exhibiting abnormal volume, strong technicals, upcoming news, or another catalyst that suggested they might be making a material move in the coming week. Sure enough, four out of five of our watchlist stocks moved in line with our expectations, generating an overall average gain of 6% in just a week – that’s 312% annually!

And while our Watchlist errs on the safe side of small-caps, using technical analysis to tell us where a stock is headed, we opened the comments up to readers last week, giving you the chance to offer up more speculative penny stock plays – and win a special edition DVD of I.O.U.S.A. in the process…

Well, the results have been tabulated, and last week’s best-performing penny pickers were Randy Moory, who recommended shares of China Finance (OTC: CHFI) for a 235% gain and L. West, whose XTEND Medical Corp. (PINK: XMDC) recommendation yielded a 150% gain. Both of our winners will be getting a Penny Sleuth Prize Package in the mail for their trouble.

You’ll get another chance to win this week. More on that in a minute…

First, onto this week’s Penny Stock Watchlist:

Synovus Financial (NYSE: SNV) – Synovus has been having a rough year in 2009. Since January, shares of this regional bank have slipped nearly 67%. And investors shouldn’t expect that trend to change anytime soon. The beginnings of a bearish descending triangle are starting to appear, and newfound resistance at the stock’s 50-day moving average is a good sign for Synovus’ short sellers. This stock could ultimately fall to $2.50 before finding any kind of support.

United America Indemnity (NASDAQ: INDM) – While insurers took their knocks last year along side the rest of the financial sector, things are looking up for United America Indemnity. A swing to thick margins in the company’s third quarter financials prompted investors to turn bullish on this stock, and the technicals are now starting to support a case for going long. Watch the increased volume on this play.

Middleburg Financial (NASDAQ: MBRG) – Middleburg is another financial stock that has made this week’s list. This regional banking company may be small, but with operations based in one of the most affluent parts of Virginia and still strong margins, this bank should continue to do well as investors pile into shares. It’s worth noting that MBRG is thinly traded, so it’s more volatile than most of our watchlist plays.

Fusion Telecommunications (OTC: FSNN) – This small over-the-counter VOIP operator has been rallying hard lately, pushing up nearly 42% in the last three months alone. While FSNN’s financial’s make the stock a somewhat dubious long-term play, the short term financials look strong enough to sustain a rally through Friday.

Hallwood Group (AMEX: HWG) – This textile and energy holding company may be small and under the radar, but traders have taken note recently pushing share up 145% in the last quarter. While the volume is thin on this stock as well, the technicals look enticing enough to make this week’s watchlist.

Once again, we’re going interactive this week… And giving readers the chance to win a free copy of I.O.U.S.A. in the process.

Just post your recommendation below in the comments section of this article between now and the market’s close on Friday, October 30. The two readers with the best performing picks each score a Special Edition DVD of the award-winning documentary.

Cheers,

  7. My pick is AKYI
Recent license agreement with Apple…lots of new products including tekcases for the iphone and the blackberry…recent uplisting to otc.bb
Lots of good news from this company that already has a fantastic line of products!
Can’t believe it’s still trading at a penny, but that can’t last for long!

  8. XOHO – what I am long this week. Strong chart pattern

  9. My pick is DRGZ.

  10. I will pick HDUP, since someone else has already picked NPHC, which would be my #1 choice as I believe the shorts will be forced to cover and with everything NPHC has going for them, especially Cobroxin(their new miracle OTC pain med and the 1st OTC pain med for moderate to severe pain) – once people try this, like I have, they be absolutely blown away. Try it, just go to cobroxin.com to order! I am very heavily invested in NPHC and I am long on this one for sure.

  11. cerp if gas prices go up it should put this one above its 52 wk mark

  17. Take a look at DYAI.

  18. Take a look at DYAI. This is a comeback story for the record books including audit dramas, charges of improprieties, ouster of the CEO and executive staff, and finally REINSTATEMENT of the CEO. Not only is the CEO reinstated, he has filed lawsuits against auditors, straightened out all SEC concerns, gotten the company back on track, including clearing FDA hurdles. Analysts have projected the stock @ $8.50 value and it is moving back up toward that level and trying to make it’s way back off the pink sheets. The price is really moving over last 2 weeks and being stable at each level of increase.

I figure this CEO is just about hellbent enough to actually make this company move from pinks to a major corporation.

  19. Also been watching and buying on dips MTCH. I believe that this is also a real company on the OTCBB rather than a shell game like so many OTCBB’s

  20. Give MedaSorb (MSBT.OB) a try. It’s a blood purification company that had its fortunes raised by new equity investment. The stock pulled back from a big surge. It looks ready to move again.l

  21. My long term favorite pick is copper/nickel/ precious metal mining company polymet [plm] in No MN. There have been over 1000 test holes drill in the last ten years and now polymet is building a processing facility.

  22. penny picks:myng, gers recent unexplained runups in the four tenths range now under two tenths

  23. NBY is my penny stock entry. Novabay Pharmaceuticals makes a novel class af anti-infectives that is poised to change the way we treat many infections (they are already generating cash through their royality and milestone agreements with several large corporations).

  24. BFHJ – Bebeficial Holdings, a Casino investment and Mamagement Company with. focus on the Central and South American markets. Many expansion projects including an online gaming site, monitor of a possible buy out of large casino and resort company as well as continuing acquisition program.

Authorized Shares 129 million – locked for 6 months

  31. I also like UVSE utterly desroyed by the price of natural gas but here comes the natural gas play and the resurgence of our own energy players WE must invest inour own if we are to become energy independent Current price is microcap prices..

  32. Also take a look at OOIL
They appear to be emerging as one of the leaders in alternative ethanol fuel research on algal production and third generation fuel.

  33. NXTH is my pick for this week.
