The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday proved to be a nice reprieve from trading – stocks are up in the first few minutes of today’s market action. And while the markets’ closure kept us from running our normal watchlist on Monday, it certainly hasn’t kept us from finding some very interesting plays for the rest of this shorter-than-normal week.

Last week was no slouch either – while major indexes like the S&P 500 slid around 1% in the last five trading sessions, our breakout watchlist averaged 11.15% gains. And while that doesn’t sound like a huge number, remember that we’re talking about 11.15% in just five trading days! Gains like that are enough to turn $1,000 into a compounded $243,945.20 in a single year…

So, that said, let’s try to deliver some more solid gains this week.

In case you’re not familiar, each week, we take a look at a list of penny stocks that are exhibiting abnormal volume, strong technicals, upcoming news, or another catalyst that suggested they might be making a material move in the coming week.

As usual, while our Watchlist errs on the safe side of small-caps, using technical analysis to tell us where a stock is headed, we opened the comments up to readers again this week, giving you the chance to offer up more speculative penny stock plays.

Check out the comments after this article to get a glimpse at a slew of new user-submitter penny stock picks — and the chance to submit your own!

First, though, let’s take a look at this week’s breakout penny stocks worth watching…

Picture 1

NeoStem Inc. (AMEX:NBS) – Shares of this small-cap stem cell bank are up big following what seemed like a good earnings release. But the real reason for the size of the pop is the ascending triangle that formed between mid-December and now. With the stock only in its third day of the breakout as of this writing, we can expect shares to move higher yet this week.

Myers Industries (NYSE:MYE) – Myers Industries, a company that manufactures polymer products and tools, is facing a similar pattern as its predecessor. But unlike NeoStem, this company is still in the early stages of forming an ascending triangle. While that makes this company a slightly riskier bet, it also means that we could benefit from the biggest part of the breakout assuming the stock stays bounded.

Picture 2

McMoRan Exploration (NYSE:MMR) – New Orleans-based oil and gas exploration company McMoRan Exploration is seeing a pretty great year in 2010 after the announcement of a new find caused the stock to breakout well above previous double-top resistance. Now, with shares consolidating way above December levels, we could see a continuation in the climb. Don’t discount this stock just because of its runup.

DivX Inc. (NASDAQ:DIVX) – Video software company DivX is our sole downside play this week. Shares turned tail in early January following a significant rally that calmed shareholders’ fears after a series of slides in late 2009. But with support well below current levels, going long this stock isn’t recommended right now.

Share Your Penny Stock Picks

Once again, we’re going interactive this week…

Just post your recommendation in the comments section of this article between now and the market’s close on Friday, January 22 to share your favorite penny stock play with the rest of the world.

Cheers,
Jonas Elmerraji

    1. my pick is APDN. just a matter of when for the price to match the news and new contracts

    2. CDBT Has what it takes to make a HUGE leap forward and up. I think it will be at 10x the price it is by the end of the year. One of those stocks that is unheard of, and undiscovered. It has a great EPS, and lots of room to grow in China, and the world.

    3. Green Energy Resources “GRGR” has signed a contract worth $72m to supply wood chips. I think this
      company has lots of potential.

    4. GRGR $1 million dollars investment and they will fast track your green card to get into the US
What idiot is running that company!!

    5. My pick is IMGG it is down to .40 but will take off this fall to 1.80 waiting on fda approval and a phy report. I wanted to get in at .50 so I’m saving a dime per share. thats ok with me.

    6. I bought appliance recycling centers of america a long time ago. (ARCI- nasdaq) recommended it many weeks ago. …I am increasing my position soon! ….She is stomping up the ladder and absolutely WILL NOT
STOP! … This one is no longer a ‘penny stock’ ….way more than my buy price in early 2009.. but will be a
rocket launch…Hell, it is already a rocket launch in my portfolio!! …(AXL- american axle & manufacturing corp.) NYSE… at $10.25 at closing today it is still a buy. …. (orthologics – CAPS – nasdaq-) watch this one!
As far as U.S. auto parts …(PRTS – Nasdaq, ) …still a buy, and a long hold in my book! ….. I did some research and a road trip over the weekend and launched a position in (BBI- blockbuster Inc.) this morning
at 0.75 per share…..holding long on this one! ….which brings me to a serious penny stock play that is
not taken seriously by the longterm investor, but could rocket launch soon into the AMEX or Nasdaq by sheer
audacity in marketing. … (skinny nutritional …SKNY) I have been in touch with the CEO Ron Wilson on numerous occasions. When i bought many 1,000s of shares in the company they have more than doubled.
Ron Wilson was a former Coca-Cola regional executive that decided to start his own company. This man knows how to run a business, and whether you buy or not, you will someday see the commercials and the stock price will be beyond todays buy price. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!

    7. My pick this week is EXPU as it is just beginning it’s breakout and will run big. GDHI is another one of my picks that will surprise everyone this week as it climbs over .01 from .0033.

    8. PEIX is a pick with huge upside, little risk. Produces ethanol fuel from corn. Fuel prices surging, corn prices plummeting long term on huge supply figures. Even the by-products (DDG) profitable. All the equipment is there just waiting for the right factors to align. The early investors took the hit on this one and letting us in for pennies on the dollar. Research this one!

    9. Whatever happened to the weekly contest, my last 3 picks made nice moves but anyway, here is my pick for this week, actually tomorrow this one should double and its a sub-penny. CSLI, check it out.

    10. SWHC Now is the time!

    11. two stocks; Jmba and igoi, believe they will make you money long term

    12. I’ll just be damned! …photomedex (PHMD) -nasdaq / i bought for 0.60 sept 2009 is blowing through the roof at $2.00 today. …on a market downturn. …Heh! ..late 2008 through late 2009 and even today is the
absolute best ‘stock pickers’ paradise i have ever seen in 15 years in this business! ….

Take a hard look at Navisite (NAVI) – Nasdaq. Also watch Isoray (ISR) Amex- Not just because i bought them for mere pennies and they are now mere dollars, …but the fact is they are not going away as many
of the ‘penny stocks’ on the PK or OTC boards do regularly. My hedge fund is very small as far as they go,
with only 273 companies to date. But ! i have made BIG money on PK & OTC stocks, and also lost when
my research left me on the scrimmage line and the company tanked in the current economy.

….I am not about to say ‘BUY’ Keryx Biopharma (KERX) because i bought it for 0.17 per share in late 2008.
But i will say that i can’t tell anyone what to buy. Research and reports + what you know is how this game is played ! ….as Peter Lynch said regarding his traders in his hedge fund which outperformed the market. …
…”none of you will be right 100% of the time ….none of you will be right 50% of the time….. The only time I
want you to be right is the few 30, 50, and 100 baggers! the gains will make up for the losses.

    13. Hey I am no expert just a female and not too good at picking them but I do like Marvel which I bought at
$15 a share now $20.00 Its a small tech company and gained from Intel’s 4th Quarter good year.
Also AMD gained from Intel. Intel is too high for me now. I used to have it, sorry we sold.
      Cheers, Pat

    14. I think penny stocks are good but its hard to choose which one. Penny Sleuth gives some good advice.
I did well with Marvel at $15 a share now $20 a share. It’s a small tech stock affected by Intel’s good
4th Quarter, also AMD, which is up today. Pat

    15. Hey I am no expert just a female and not too good at picking them but I do like Marvel which I bought at
$15 a share now $20.00 Its a small tech company and gained from Intel’s 4th Quarter good year also
AMD gained from Intel. Intel is too high for me now. I used to have it, sorry we sold.
      Cheers, Pat

    16. I have one good pick Marvel, a small tech gained from Intel’s good last quarter bought at $15 now $20.
We have AMD which is up.

    17. Sorry I duplicated my comments, can you delete the extra, I can’t seem to do so.
Sorry this is my first giving my stock views.

    18. With all due respect to Jonas & the rest of the ‘penny stock’ executive team, …Sometimes you hit ! and sometimes you miss miserably with your picks. …The purpose of a paid subscription to a newsletter is
NOT for the purpose of ‘BUY what i tell you to buy’… but rather to give insight to market trends, but this is not
always feasible under current political conditions and market constraint when the sheep just sell-off great
companies due to the fact that a few of the big companies on the Dow and S&P index take a major dive,
and there is a ‘broad market sell-off’ of great companies which are not damaged companies, only damaged
stocks! …..I salute your efforts, and as a small hedge fund manager and subscriber to this and a few other
Bullish ~VS~ Contrarian newsletters i give this one a A+ rating.

There are many commercials on CNBC with shysters screaming “BUY and HOLD just does not work” …
I will refute that sentiment right now because i have heard it before. Sept. 11 -2001 …a few days later when
the U.S. market opened it was dumped! I lost $14,000 in a day.. I yawned and held. …what happened?
many months later it came back with a vengeance. My point being that when you own strong companies with
good balance sheets you will always be in the black in a market recovery.

I have one last thing to add to my ranting & raving this week! …(ARCI) I have nothing more to say except
Appliance recycling corp. inc. is UP 0.18% 1-22-2010 on a day when the dow dropped 219 points and the
Nasdaq lost over 60! …ARCI is still a buy at $3.50 at closing bell in my book. …My sell exit is $22.00 .
